Too Dark To See

by That Dream Was Our Life

/
1.
Voices ring louder & later through the night Summer's breaking out like a thief for the light Days are running long & longer by the hour I haven't seen you in an age & I wonder how you are Caught in dancing lights that call you by your name I felt intoxicated with no desire for escape The city keeps its heat like gold around your finger I tried to ring you up because I missed you But I couldn't find a signal The deeper that we fall the longer that we grieve A prison of the heart that we never want to leave We think we have to learn courage to be saved We think we need it to survive but surviving makes you brave You're packed for California, I'm heading to New York I'm sleeping in the car & someone's at the door The night is full of stars & ways to disappear I still feel you through the bars & I wish that you were here I wish that you were here
2.
Guess I stayed too long The echo of a laugh The glow that starts to fade Do I always get it wrong The hollow on the map The never feeling safe I don't know any other way Tried to play it cool Occasional collapse Without a hope or a doubt I watched it like a fool The rapture of the dark While the air is running out I don't know any other way
3.
Put up your hair, free drinks in the air Put on the red leather jacket that you always wear We forget our shadows when we learn to dance To the sound of dreams that shatter before they turn to ash Someone drew a heart in the window of the bar The condensation shimmered in the light like a thousand blinking stars You said "I need someone to complete me" I said my heart belongs to someone I can't have You said "Don't you think it's kind of funny what makes most people happy can make them feel so sad" You fumbled with the lock & you stumbled through the door You said "Can you help me with these pants" as you sprawled out on the floor Most boys prefer you when you're drunk But I don't want the same things that they want I don't want throwaway people or counterfeits I don't want bells & whistles or special effects I don't want someone clever just give me hope I don't want someone who's always giving up I don't know if I'll learn but I'm older now Propped you up & waited till you woke up on your couch Walked home in the dark feeling like a shrunken head Severed to survive the curses of the dead
4.
Take me farther than away I'm no closer to escape We listen with our eyes closed as the seasons start to change Drag queens in the park Trace my veins to where they start If we're never here again I still feel you through the bars I'm always on the edge Another near-miss strikes again A reflection in the glass Of the outside looking in A moth mistakes a streetlight for the sun If I roll the dice one more time will you kiss me for good luck Even if I win I can't tell you what's going to happen to us When I'm old and all alone will I remember anything I've lost I've got no heart for wishes I never know where I belong Truth is just like time it catches up & it just keeps going on & on Like a wind that blows & blows Like a knife that twists just so Take me farther than forever I always need you close I always need you close
