Nothing Ever Stays Buried

by That Dream Was Our Life

/
1.
A mirror can distort or reflect I'm not the hero of the story I live When you're pulling up your knees to your chest Can you find it in yourself to forgive Do you ever feel like you belong when you're everything to everyone? When your heartbeat is beating so strong Harrowing scenes of regret There are ghosts I can never outrun There are so many faces I'll forget That are disappointed in the person I've become I never know where I belong I don't want to be loved by just anyone Am I always getting it wrong Everybody wants to be right Everybody wants to connect Boxes of artificial light To the power of desire & contempt
2.
A voice reflecting back against the wall Echoes of your past floating through the hall A memory that makes you feel so small The taste of blood, the smell of alcohol It's never been this strong The laugh before the fall Are those headlights through the fog Everyone wants to know what's wrong with you You tell yourself a lie enough times to make it true The mask you wear is intended for a fool You're always biting off more than you can chew Are you dumb enough to see it through The devil wants to see you choose Who's got their teeth in you You can't wait to share the news Showing off your latest bruise A broken nose & thigh tattoos
3.
Will you help me up when I get weak & I'll say the words that you can't speak Your eyes change color like the lights up in the trees They flash like fireflies over the cobblestone & leaves When I can't walk will you help me stand When you get sick I'll hold your hand When I hurt myself will you light the way When you get lost I'll stay & keep you safe Getting older & still looking for a path Hunched over with the world on my back Never over till we give ourselves a chance Doubled over 'cause you can't contain a laugh I need you like a river needs the sea To pour into your arms until I fall asleep
4.
You bury your life like a dinosaur A time capsule left to be forgotten Memories preserved under miles of stone Maybe someday they'll turn to diamonds Lost idols & secret chambers And you're running for your life like some kind of Indiana Jones You've found you're an introverted excavator Some discoveries are better made alone Isn't it beautiful when sunlight shines on bone Mysteries reveal & come together You're so beautiful when it hits your hair just so What will you uncover in the future
