The Heart Only Counts To One

by That Dream Was Our Life

/
1.
Heaven beyond your hope, a hell beneath your wings Maybe someday I'll find the nerve to tell you everything Slow dancing under flashing lights that spin purple blue to green You were shrouded in smoke like a mystery to me Time never runs out for the prettiest girl in the room The winter's been dead but you're always in bloom Trip the light like lovers but we only pretend This might be our future if we didn't know the end I don't know how to be safe Only how my heart behaves If I could tell you I would tell you but I don't know what to say I owe you everything that stands Between heaven & your hands There are a million things in this world that I'll never understand I don't know how to be safe Only how my heart behaves If I could tell you I would tell you but the words get in the way Sunflowers on your dress A scarf around your head The future's never clear, it's always dark, it's for the best The gunshot of your smile It echoes through the sky Wonder can make time stand still for just a little while I don't know how to be safe Only how my heart can shake If I could find you I would find you but my life got in the way I don't know how to be safe
2.
The smell of nickel on your hands from holding keys the whole way home The past casts a long shadow but a shadow never keeps you warm Cartoon faces on silverware, folding paper in your hands I'll lose everything you've ever given me like the heat from a wedding band If I knew, I could wait forever Under memory & stone Will you bury me like a treasure Undiscovered & unknown The taste of rose mint on your lips we roam like nomads all night long Desire is a dark phantom that follows but it never takes its form A thunder quakes across your heart, the first lightning of the spring If we ever kissed in a dream I don't know what those kisses mean If I knew, I could wait forever Under memory & stone Will you bury me like a treasure Undiscovered & unknown If I was sure, I would wait forever Under mystery & bones Will you search for me like a treasure Undiscovered & alone
3.
Lights out for the night owl It gets so dark don't you freak out You're so pretty whenever we're out I'm always eating my heart out 8th street is full of real talk Boys are looking at you up & down the sidewalk A dream is over when you wake up The spark that lights a secret story flames out Does it feel like you haven't been touched It's always been you but it's never been me Sometimes I fear that I want this too much And the things that I want aren't meant to be Lights out for the night owl It gets so dark don't you freak out You're so pretty whenever we're out I'm always eating my heart out Lights out Sometimes you laugh when you're breathing in smoke Always getting it wrong when I want to be right The sun comes up like it's some kind of joke It takes so long to forget these nights
4.
i'll be yr pet asleep on the floor while you finish yr beer but I won't forget i'll pull away from yr hand with instinctual fear i'm tired of waiting to lead you to safety the light's not changing we'll stay here as long as it takes all that i am is blind resentment two years of regret delusions of rising above & being good enough to forget i'm tired of waiting to leave you the light's not changing we're stuck here as long as it takes
